Here is a
list of classes VOICES will be offering during our Fall 2010 and
Spring 2011! Although some classes will be available by audition
only, no previous experience is required to participate in any of
our classes.
Class Descriptions (FALL 2010/SPRING 2011)
BACK-UP VOCALS
(ages 13 & up)
This class, for teens and adults, focuses on teaching the art of back–up vocals! Class participants will work on learning harmony for songs to be performed at monthly Open Mic Nights, where they will be encouraged to showcase what they have learned!
BROADWAY "SHOWSTOPPERS" CHOIR (ages 12 & up)
Broadway has spanned the ages and generations of time! There is no doubt you can hum a Broadway tune at this very moment! Join the Showstoppers Choir to learn about musical theatre past and present, sing some tunes with your friends, and have a great time!
BROADWAY WORKSHOP
(ages 16 & up)
Aimed at older teens and adults with a love for the Broadway hits,
this fun and fast paced workshop will give students the chance to
perform Broadway tunes and prepare scenes from current and past
Broadway shows.
CARNEGIE HALL CHOIR (ages 13 & up)
Mozart, Handel, Bach, Beethoven, Pachelbel, and others . . . Each composer wrote music intended to be sung across the decades! In this new VOICES choir, available by audition only, we will learn about the history and significance of some great classical pieces as we prepare them to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York!
CHARACTER EXPLORATION (ages 9-12)
It’s been said that all of the most believable, and the most memorable, roles ever played had one common denominator – the actors fully developed their characters. In this class, students will explore and practice excellent character development, including getting to know their character – how they think, how they feel, and what motivates them to act the way they do. Don’t miss this exciting new class!
DISNEY CHOIR
(ages 5-7)
Kids between the ages of
5 & 7 have the opportunity to be involved in a fun, hip choral
experience! As the name implies, we will focus on learning
songs from both Disney movies and contemporary Disney pop stars!
FUNDAMENTALS OF ACCOMPANIMENT (ages 8-15)
This class is for our piano and guitar students who would like to learn the art of accompaniment. In class they will learn the skills needed to effectively accompany a vocalist.
GLEE CLUB (ages 13 & up)
This class, available by audition only, will be comprised of a group of dedicated students under the guidance of VOICES Director Satyam Patel. Based on the TV show, Glee, students will learn and prepare several musical pieces, from pop to R&B. The tight harmonies and fun choreography will be showcased through various performance opportunities throughout the year.
GROUP GUITAR FOR BEGINNERS
(ages 8-15)
Learn to read music easily in a group setting! Designed
specifically for beginning guitarists, we will go over simple
melodies and chords. Our goal is to supply you with the tools
needed to pick up any song and play it!! So, bring your
guitar, your friends, and get ready to rock!
KIDS ACTING
(ages 5-7, 6-8)
In this class, students explore movement, vocalization, character
development and ensemble building. Through games and
exercises, students begin to develop the acting skills needed to
create believable characters, in which they may participate in an
end-of-year show for an invited audience.
KIDS MUSICAL THEATRE (ages 5-7)
A fun and educational program designed to help young ones explore their creativity through music, movement, and storytelling, while learning songs from their family-friendly Broadway shows! This class introduces students to the fundamentals of performance, all culminating in final presentations for family and friends at the Holiday and Spring Showcases! This class provides a great place for our littlest stars to learn to shine!
KIDS SHOW CHOIR
(ages 6-8)
Let’s face it – some kids just LOVE to be the center of attention!
Well this is the choir for them! As a great first choir for 6 to 8 year
olds, kids will explore the basics of music and singing in a group
setting. Topics include diction, pitch, rhythm, and tempo. And
don’t forget the fun end-of-year performance, complete with choreography!
MUSICAL THEATRE BASICS (ages 8-12)
Students will find this comprehensive theatre training class inspiring, engaging and challenging. They will be given the necessary building blocks to grow as a performer while developing improved audition skills, body movement and overcoming stage fright. Topics will include make-up and character development, as well as voice, acting, and dance, all culminating in final performances for family and friends at the Holiday and Spring Showcases!
PRE-TEEN ACTING
(ages 9-12)
Focus on what happens after you land that role... and how to create
a performance that will be unforgettable. Students will learn how to
properly warm-up their bodies and voices, and sharpen their focus. Theatrical games and exercises, scene work and discussion will give
students the tools to make a role their own.
PRE-TEEN POP CHORUS
(ages 9-12)
Similar to a show choir for older kids, this is a perfect group for
kids 9-12 years old - - beginners and more experienced singers
alike. Students will learn to harmonize, blend, and gel as a group
in a fun and supportive environment while learning contemporary
music like pop, Broadway and jazz. A fun end-of-year performance
will top off this great learning experience.
SING BETTER NOW! (ages 13 & up)
This class will focus on vocal technique and how to properly apply it to YOUR style of singing. We will focus on improving specific performance pieces that students are working on perfecting. Beginners are welcome. . . a great class for all levels of singing!
STAGE SKILLS FOR SINGERS (ages 9-12, 13-18)
Improve your stage presence with this fun and exciting class! Singers will learn to connect to a song both emotionally and
physically. Whether you want to lose your fear when singing in front
of a group of people or you just need to learn what to do with your
body when singing, this class is perfect for you!
TEEN ACTING
(ages 13-18)
Teens get a taste of professional acting training in
this terrific class. Performers learn to use voice and body in
performance through dynamic games and exercises. Discover
character development through movement, improvisation, and analysis.
Polish acting skills through monologues and scene study. The
class will simulate a professional environment as students learn
about auditioning, blocking, and working with a director.
TEEN IDOLS
(ages 13-18)
Imagine singing a song on stage with
your very own back-up singers! This fun class will focus on
teaching you stage
presence from 2 different perspectives - (1) as a soloist and (2) as
a back-up singer. Each student will learn 1 solo song and
harmonies to sing back-up for his/her peers, culminating in an
end-of-year performance!
THE ZEN OF GUITAR (ages 13 & up)
Become “one” with the guitar! This class will teach how to approach new techniques, memorize songs, and how to develop a practice routine that fits your learning style. This class introduces the philosophy of music and treats it as both an art and a discipline. This class is for intermediate guitarists.
VOICES NEWS TEAM
(ages 13-18)
Come audition to be a part of the coolest news show in the valley produced by teens!!! Learn what goes on behind the scenes as well as in front of the camera! Together, we will create a news show twice a month to be played in the VOICES lobby filled with interviews of local celebrities as well as upcoming events that will be taking place here at VOICES and in the community! And, all students will earn community service hours!
VOICES OF SOUL CHOIR (ages 13 & up)
This NEW choir is all about taking a bit of R&B, a touch of Pop, a
hint of Gospel, and mixing it with a whole lot of SOUL! We
will work on rehearsing and preparing several pieces to perform for
our holiday and spring showcases. No previous experience
necessary! The only requirement is that you "got soul!"
Camp Descriptions (Summer 2010)
Broadway Stars Camp (ages 8-18)
A great set of classes for all ages and levels of experience. Work with professional coaches and teachers in all aspects of theater: Acting, Singing, and Dancing. Students will be divided into appropriate age groups and learn skills to prepare and master some of Broadway’s most notable scenes and musical numbers! This class runs for two weeks at The Homestead Playhouse, and will culminate in a live performance at the end of the session!
Sing! Play! Act! (ages 3-5)
It has been said that the foundation of an actor’s work is PLAY. In this camp, younger students stretch the limits of their imagination as they learn how to bring fantastic characters to life through play: acting out fun, age-appropriate stories, learning simple instruments, and playing other fun singing and acting games. It’s a great way to challenge a child’s imagination, all while being active!
Guitar Fundamentals (ages 9-12)
Whether you’re brand new to guitar, or you just need to brush up on the basics, this camp is just what you need! You bring your own guitar and we’ll supply you with the tools needed to improve and play like a pro! Every student will have a different experience based on their own personal style, so whether you prefer rock, pop, country, jazz or metal shredding, this camp is just for you!
Playwriting for Teens (ages 13-18)
Do you love to write? Do you want to write plays? Students in this class will learn the different elements that go in to writing a play, along with terrific tips and tricks for character development, scene preparation and setting up a script for success! We’ll give you the tools and knowledge to pursue more writing, and the mentoring to prepare a script with your class that will be performed at the end of camp!
Shred Academy (ages 13-18)
This class will introduce the skills necessary to become
a guitar virtuoso! Students will learn scales, chord shapes, and stamina-building exercises
that will improve their speed and precision with the guitar. Some experience with the
guitar will be helpful, but hard-working beginners will enjoy this class as well!
The Ultimate Singer’s Camp (ages 13-18)
Think of this as our own personal American Idol! We have professional instructors who will work with you on your songs, your stage presence and choreography! We’ll even have an image consultant available to help you find your personal style. You pick your song and we’ll help you perfect the whole package and have you performance-ready for our end of camp concert!
Kids Show Choir Camp (ages 6-8)
Built for fun and ready to rock, this camp is aimed at kids who want to explore the basics of music in a group setting. Topics include the most important building blocks for all choral singers: diction, pitch, rhythm, and tempo. So get your friends together and we’ll have some fun putting together a great choir experience for kids!
Acting Essentials (ages 13-18)
This workshop, offered in two parts, provides tons of valuable information for beginning and seasoned actors! In the morning session you’ll learn all kinds of interesting and useful information about auditioning: how to dress, what to bring, how to prepare, and a top 10 list of things you should and should NOT do at your auditions. The afternoon sessions will focus on selecting the scenes and monologues that you relate to, and polishing your performance of selected scenes, using improv and character development exercises.
Broadway Choir Camp (ages 13-18)
Similar to the Kids’ Show Choir, this camp will teach your kids everything they need to know to prepare for choir singing on a more advanced level, focusing on popular Broadway show tunes! With this performance-based choir, kids of EVERY level will learn something new and have a blast while doing it!
Musical Theatre Essentials (ages 9-12)
This is a great class for anyone interested in musical theater! Students will learn everything they need to know, including audition skills, choreography and body movement, make-up and character development, as well as the many aspects of performance!
Audition Techniques (ages 9-12)
Auditioning for a play at school or at a community theatre? Come join us and you’ll learn all kinds of interesting and useful information about auditioning: how to dress, what to bring, how to prepare, and a top 10 list of things you should and should NOT do at your auditions. After this class you will be well on your way to getting the part!
Acting For The Camera (ages 9-12)
How are acting for the stage and screen different? This Camp will answer that question...and more! Learn proper technique and skills professional actors use to get the job, do it well, and keep getting called back for more!
Carnegie Hall Prep Camp (ages 13-18)
This class offers a basic education in concert choral singing and performance, as well as the opportunity to work on the Carnegie Hall selections prior to auditions! (Note: Participation in our June 2011 Carnegie Hall trip is NOT required for participation in this camp.)
Glee Camp (ages 13-18)
Yup, you’ve seen it on TV! Now come experience it for yourself at VOICES’ Glee Camp! We will meet every day to work on preparing the ultimate Glee concert for your family and friends at the end of camp! Camp topics include picking the right songs, harmonies, choreography and completing the package with the right look!
